Andrew Struck-Marcell is a composer and sound designer based in New York City. He has predominantly composed concert music, and has recently begun to create audio for video games as well as compose for live multimedia.
His concert music aims to create a sense of ritual that encourages contemplation and catharsis. Having come in close contact with Hindustani Music, he incorporates some of its forms and gestures, while also striving to evoke coloristic moods that create a novel sensory experience in the listener. Andrew’s work was said to produce “a fine languor” and to be “ruminative” (Feast of Music).
Performances of his music have occurred throughout the United States and Europe at events and venues such as Roulette, the SEAMUS National Conference, Frederick Loewe Theater, the Tank NYC, the National Gallery, the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Midwest Composers Symposium, and the at the Conservatorio G. Tartini Trieste. Groups and performers of his work include the janus trio,¬†One World Symphony, Cadillac Moon Ensemble, the NYU Symphony Orchestra, the Naiades Ensemble, Natalie Clein, Trio Kavak, and the Iowa Center for New Music. He is currently pursing a PhD in composition at New York University, where his dissertation research consists of an analytical and empirical study of Morton Feldman’s Coptic Light. Previously, he studied at the Royal College of Music, London and at the University of Iowa. Recently, he created the audio for the official IndieCade selected game Maquisard.
Andrew’s involvement with Hindustani music includes tabla studies in America and in the Kolkata area with Narayan Bhattacharjee. Additionally, he is a founding member and artistic director for Nodes Performing Arts, a new organization that has presented several music and dance concerts around New York. He also plays keyboard and helps compose for the instrumental rock band Audiometry.
